The honest case for wooden tees
Let's be fair to wood: it's cheap, it's traditional, it's biodegradable, and every pro shop on earth sells it. If you break a wooden tee, you shrug and reach for another. For a lot of golfers, that's the whole decision.
But "cheap per tee" and "cheap per season" are different math — and the real cost of wood isn't money anyway. It's what breaking does to your game.
What breaking actually costs you
1. Your setup consistency. Every snapped tee gets replaced by a different one — a different length, pushed to a different depth, at a different height. Different height means a different strike point on the face, which means different launch and different carry. You're introducing a new variable every few holes and then blaming your swing for the scatter.
2. Your focus. Digging through your pocket for an unbroken tee while your foursome waits is not a pre-shot routine. Neither is begging your buddy for a spare on the 3rd tee box.

"Plastic tees are all the same, though"
They're not — and this is where most plastic tees earn their bad reputation. A cheap plastic tee is just a wooden tee's shape in worse material: same friction-heavy cup, no height control, and brittle enough to crack in cold weather. Frequently asked questions
Do plastic tees damage drivers?
No — impact with the ball dwarfs any contact with a tee, wood or plastic. Modern driver faces are engineered for far greater forces than a 2-gram tee can produce.
Why do my wooden tees keep breaking?
Wood grain is strong along its length but weak across it. A descending or slightly off-center strike loads the tee sideways — exactly where grain fails. It's not your swing; it's the material.
Do composite tees work in cold weather?
Cold makes wood (and cheap brittle plastic) snappier. A flexible composite is far less temperature-sensitive — which is why fall and winter golfers are some of our most loyal customers.
