My Story
Hi, I’m Bob Wagstaff
I’m an Army Veteran, biochemist, nutritionist, husband, father of 5, grandfather of 18, great-grandfather of 23, golfer, and inventor. I received my PhD in Biochemistry and Poultry Nutrition from Washington State University. After a successful career in the poultry business, I became an entrepreneur. Since then, I’ve been awarded 7 patents for various inventions, the most recent being the Fire Away Tee.
How I Wound Up in the Golf Business
One day, a golfing buddy told me how frustrated he was with his martini tee and asked if I could design a better one. I knew that I could. So I went home and started sketching out ideas. Next, I had number of prototypes made—some with a three-point holder, and some with a four-point holder. Another friend urged me to go with the four-point holder because it was “more stable”. He was right. This turned out to be a very critical decision.
IN MY WORKSHOP
Here, I’m testing the durability of one of the prototypes with a hammer.
The Substance of Things to Come
As a scientist, I brought my scientific training to this project. We tested over two dozen different materials, and none of them had the flexibility and durability I was looking for. Then, out of nowhere, a salesman appeared that I hadn’t seen in five years. He said he had a new nylon composite that he said, “Might do the trick”. It worked. It was the most resilient and pliable material we had tested. With the design complete and the perfect material in hand, we made one last prototype.
MANUFACTURING
A state of the art injection moldingmachine produces a limited run of prototypes for testing.
Independent, Third Party Tested
If we tested our own tee, there would be potential for bias. If we asked our golf buddies to test it, it would be anecdotal and unscientific. But if we had a professional, independent, third-party test it, it would be legit.
So that’s what we did. We sent our tee to Golf Laboratories in San Diego, CA, the industry’s gold standard in golf equipment testing.
Golf Labs uses a precision engineered robot for testing, to eliminate any chance for human error.
You can see the results on the chart here. We’re not trying to brag or anything, but our Fire Away Tee outperformed all the other tees in every measureable category. Even we were surprised. We figured our tee was pretty good, but we didn’t know it was this good.
